Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic as well as its largest city, and has often been regarded as one of the most stunning metropolises in the world. Among the largest cities in Europe, Prague has served as the Bohemian Capital for centuries. Blessed with unique medieval architecture, including striking church domes, magical bridges, and jaw-dropping cathedrals, the city stands tall along the banks of the glistening, swan-filled Vltava River.

Home to the world’s largest castle (according to the Guinness Book of World Records), Prague is known to be the first European city to have released a book about the legendary composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, commonly known as Mozart. Interestingly, Prague’s Jewish Quarter was spared during World War II as it is believed that Hitler wanted to retire here and transform the neighborhood into a museum dedicated to “the extinct race.”

While planning a visit to the city, it is useful to know that Prague is divided into 10 numbered districts: Prague 1, Prague 2 and so on, until Prague 10. Having said that, let us now explore some of the most popular neighborhoods in the city so you can decide where to stay in Prague during your visit to this marvelous location.

Prague Old Town

The geographical center of Prague, and perhaps its most important neighborhood, the Old Town area welcomes the most visitors to the city. At its historical core is the Old Town Square, a former 10th century marketplace which now hosts the most important political, religious, and entertainment events of the city. If you take a look around when you are at the Square you will see some of the most important and beautifully-preserved architecture in all of Prague, including the Old Town City Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Tyn. However, the most significant landmark in this neighborhood and the entire city is the astronomical clock which was added to the Old Town City Hall in 1410 and has been the focal attraction for visitors in Prague ever since. While here, you must make the climb up the tower to enjoy a spell-binding view of the city – you will understand why Prague is nicknamed the ‘city of 1000 spires’ once you are at the top.

Prague Lesser Town

Nicknamed ‘the Baroque Pearl of Prague,’ Lesser Town is perhaps the most romantic and captivating neighborhood in the city. Most of the buildings in the vicinity were reconstructed after a devastating 16th Century fire which burnt down the previous structures. Locally known as Mala Strana, the neighborhood is home to some of the most prominent landmarks of the city. The Charles Bridge, constructed in 1357, was commissioned to connect the two riverbanks of Vltava River. Rumor has it that King Charles IV was a numerology and astrology fanatic and he ordered the construction of the bridge to start exactly at 5:31 am on July 9th, 1357. A carving of 135797531 can be found on the Old Town Bridge Tower. Another notable attraction in the area is the John Lennon Wall: a small, graffiti-covered wall dedicated to John Lennon. Last but definitely not least, the Lesser Town Square, with its grand masterpiece, the St. Nicholas Church, boasting a 70-meter dome and a fresco painting of the Holy Trinity, this landmark has been the hub of all tourist activities for over 10 centuries and is where you can find the best architecture in the neighborhood, as well as other tourist attractions.
