Pine[edit]

Hi JMK - your pine photos File:Pinus sylvestris, loof, a.jpg, File:Pinus sylvestris, loof, b.jpg and File:Pinus sylvestris, keëls.jpg are not P. sylvestris; I'm not fully certain what they are (not helped by the cones being well past their 'Best before' date!), but possibly Pinus brutia. - MPF (talk) 09:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Will check that out, thank you! The tree is nearby so I could take more photos. JMK (talk) 09:38, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Curious - were you able to get more pics? - MPF (talk) 20:51, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've submitted the pics to a South African forum for identification, but no comments yet, not many pine experts in this country. Will see what pictures I can get once I've recovered from influenza. Meanwhile you may like to try google streetview -25.746111,28.188056 to see a number of these trees. JMK (talk) 09:44, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! Sorry to hear about the 'flu, hope you're well now. I couldn't see any pines at all at the Church Square indicated, but did find a Pinus brutia or P. halepensis (streetview camera resolution not quite good enough to tell which, but definitely one of those two) a short way west on the Church Road cemetery at -25.747128, 28.176714, and a row of the same on Prince's Park Avenue at -25.749536 28.178529. MPF (talk) 23:21, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My apologies! Was indeed trying to point out the Prince's Park trees. Still recovering, but will soon set aside a weekend to do this. JMK (talk) 07:18, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No problem! There's some other rather more interesting-looking pines deeper into that cemetery too (approx -25.746966 28.176129), worth getting pics of. Long-needled, perhaps P. montezumae or some other Mexican species. - MPF (talk) 11:54, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
At my last visit to the particular pine tree, it had some new cones, but just too high to reach or photograph. Will take a stroll on the golf course soon to search for another tree of this species. And at some point will visit the said cemetery too. JMK (talk) 17:56, 23 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK thanks! I just took another virtual walk along the full length of Prince's Park Avenue on google street view, and managed to see enough detail to pin them down as P. halepensis, not P. brutia. I'll edit the three pics to reflect this. - MPF (talk) 21:09, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Burgher House incorrectly renamed[edit]

Hi JMK :) File:Bergskadus,_Paarl,_South_Africa_-_20041107.jpg should not have been renamed and is incorrectly used on Wikipedia under the Paarl building's listing. I took a photo of File:Burgher House, Stellenbosch.JPG on Saturday and it is the same building. There are a few black and white photos of the Paarl building online and the one obvious difference is that the Paarl building has stairs leading up to the stoep. HelenOnline 16:02, 23 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You're absolutely right. Very sharp. I made a mistake there due to the similar architecture and gable of the two buildings, and realised my mistake a while ago. I asked a certain paarliet to take me a photo of the real Bergskadus so that I can transfer the currently incorrect historical information, but he hasn't got to it yet. Anyway, if you want to proceed with any fixes, please do so. And if you can take a photo of Bergskadus at Paarl, just beside the N1, that would be great also. JMK (talk) 17:57, 23 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks JMK, all fixed now and the file history is still there if you need it. I don't think I will get out to Paarl again this year. I was there on unrelated business a few weeks ago but my car had to be jumpstarted so I drove straight home without stopping. I am quite overwhelmed by the number of unphotographed monuments in Stellenbosch where I live, so I am focussing my energy on that now. HelenOnline 07:30, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. A trick that you may find useful when uploading photos: When adding personal categories, you can create an abbreviation as a shortcut (redirect). When using the upload form you can then enter the abbreviation only, and the full category name will appear immediately. JMK (talk) 08:17, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK thanks will do, uploading takes forever! HelenOnline 08:27, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Paleotrópico.png[edit]

Climate zones have not borders or walls among them. There are transition zones with mixed climate, fauna and flora. The map in Encyclopedia Britannica includes the whole transition range (mainly Sahara and Arab deserts) in the Paleotropic zone, while the map I did includes only the southern half of transition range in the Paleotropic region. None of them is wrong or right. It is just a cuestion of opinion from diferent sources. --Osado (talk) 12:08, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you. If you want to draw a second map however, that follows the version of Encyclopedia Britannica, it would be just as useful as your first map. JMK (talk) 07:21, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Glad to see you're still active here where the job is never finished. Thanks for uploading the interesting moth. I thought a careful combination of contrast and midtone adjustments may sometimes improve an image without adding an unnatural element. JMK (talk) 07:39, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was led to the photo by the way, when I wrote about the plant E. zeyheri. JMK (talk) 07:53, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That moth was badly placed for shootig pictures: it was sitting on the neon tube - and it did't like being taken on a picture:

3-4 pics and it was gone.... I did not spot it again, since, though as I got a special 175W trapping light on my terasse almost every night. I believe that it must be quite rare in our place. Rgds Tonton Tonton Bernardo (talk) 16:41, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi JMK. Many thanks for working through my photos of the Karoo National Park and identifying the animals in them! Given the way that Commons uses the latin names for animals, and my poor knowledge of the subspecies of different animals, it would have taken me forever to figure them out. Please keep up the good work. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:15, 12 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Think most of the South African picture categories have been tended to now, as far as I am able to assist. I don't know what the blue Karoo daisies are. The following file, Unidentified plant, Hare Hill, Cheshire 2.jpg, may refer to Lilium martagon, but there are also hybrids which include that species. Thanks for uploading File:Rhoicissus revoilii, loof, Steenbokpan.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. Bots[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Date format[edit]

Hello JMK, i have seen that the format you are using for dates in the {{Information}} is not the one that is required for the template. I suggest to use dates of the format "YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm", which would be e.g. "2015-08-02 12:02" instead of "2015-Aug-02, 12:02" as you were using it. This way the date is displayed in a correct way to other users in other languages and it is parsable by programms. Would really appricate your cooperation in future. About the already uploaded files i will take care of. Regards, --Arnd (talk) 12:46, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Will do so. There are a big number with the old date format. JMK (talk) 13:16, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It may also be useful to specify somewhere in the template whether the date required is the day of upload or the day the photo was taken. What about some automatic way of doing this, where the upload program reads the photo's exif data? I know of some web sites where this in fact happens. You upload without a date and the date is extracted from the exif data. JMK (talk) 13:22, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks, i will fix the old ones which a special script. The date in {{Information}} is always the creation date, which means for a photo it is the day when you made it. I am using the Special:UploadWizard which is exactly doing what you explain. It uses the date (and also GPS position if available) from the EXIF date and pre-filles the template. Ciao, --Arnd (talk) 13:33, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi again JMK, i am through with your photos. If you find some date pattern which i did not fix yet, please let me know. Have a nice evening, --Arnd (talk) 18:05, 4 August 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks! There are some instances where I have a comma between date and time, that breaks the format, like this one: File:Combretum kraussii, habitus, b, Louwsburg.jpg. Another bug is that my camera changes the orientation of some photos, when the camera is held at a certain angle. In this photo for instance: Achaea lienardi, Krantzkloof Natuurreservaat, b.jpg, the object appears in the preferred orientation after upload, but flash viewer tilts it +90 degrees. In case that could be rectified without damaging the photo or its resolution, and assuming it is just some parameter which requires a change, then that would be just as welcome. Category discussion warning

Flora of Kruger National Park has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

Hello JMK,
I am the maintainer of {{VN}} and discovered your recent addition to some VN.
I don't understand where these language code come from: luob, niq, toi...
They never were managed by {{VN}} but they also seem totally unknown to wikipedia in general.
Can you give me details ?
Best regards 12:12, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. They are mostly African and Asian languages and I would appreciate if they are added. I found the codes on wikipedia, and one that I regularly need but don't get, is the Ndebele language. Others are bem, bin, mnk, nup, and as you mention toi. Give me a while and I can look them up. JMK (talk) 12:20, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
luob is the Luo language and toi the Tonga language of Zambia. JMK (talk) 12:26, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
tuv is Turkana, niq is Naandi, nd is northern Ndebele, mas is Maasai, saq is Samburu. JMK (talk) 13:19, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
bem is Bemba, bin is Edo, mnk is Mandinka, nup is Nupe. I also need Ovambo, and would be nice to distinguish between Sotho (N) and Sotho (S) (i.e. north and south). JMK (talk) 13:32, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I totally understand the need for new languages.
The question question is were do the languageCode come from ? you choose toi, why not ton ?
You must understand that I am a simple contributor and {{VN}} a simple template. we are not really places to take decisions about new languages and their code.
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 17:09, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Those are ISO 639-2 codes, and in some cases ISO 639-3. The latter incorporates more language codes than ISO 639-2. These codes also appear low down in the infobox of the particular language page on wikipedia. You can look them up below the last yellow bar in the infobox. JMK (talk) 18:08, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see now that the ISO 639-2 and ISO 639-3 pages both have a wonderful feature where you can type "ISO 639:mas" in a box (for instance), and it takes you to the language page (Maasai in that case) that it corresponds to! So if you have the code you can get the language, and if you have the language you can get the code. JMK (talk) 18:16, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, understoud.
Sadly VN currently use lua api fetchLanguageNames that manages 417 languages.
I am planning to access to an additional set of 302 languages (without interwiki nor wikidata) recently accessible via fetchLanguageNames(,'all') and provided by Extension:CLDR.
I cannot do more without any lua library. This for 2 reasons:
  • for each languageCode, I need its language name in this language (autonym) for {{VN}}
  • for each languageCode, I need its language name in the wikicommons reader language (417 possibilities !) for {{VN/doc}}

Quisqualis / Combretum[edit]

Hi, Jmk

I am confused about this move because:

  1. Quisqualis parviflora is an accepted name on plant list
  2. Combretum parviflora does not exist for gammatical reasons: combretum is neuter, the ending -a is feminine
  3. Combretum parviflorum is a synonym according to the Plant list for a different species, that I cannot find back on SANBI

So why the move, and what is the plant you took pictures of? Jcwf (talk) 19:37, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for pointing out. I must agree with you, and cannot remember why I decided on that move. The photos are of Quisqualis parviflora Gerrard ex Sond., and they must be moved to that category. Your previous comment about desired pictures is also appreciated. JMK (talk) 21:11, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Photo-phylles 2017[edit]

Hi JMK,

I just found some interesting pictures on your pages.

Probably you don't know what is Photo-phylles. It's both an international competition and a pedagogical exhibition organized by the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux, France, and the Association of botanists OÏKOS. The selected photos are shown for more than 4 months in various places and receive each year more than 5,000 visitors, for a half young people coming with their schoolmasters or teachers.

I suggest you have a look to this website http://www.jjmilan.sitew.fr/#accueil.A

We would be honoured if you accept to participate! It's completely free.

Best regards Jean-Jacques MILAN (talk) 15:19, 22 December 2016 (UTC) (talk) 22:06, 16 December 2016 (UTC) (administrator of the french Wikibooks)Reply[reply]

Will take a look, thanks. At the moment I take fairly low resolution photos. If time does not allow me to take part, you are welcome to use any of my wikipedia photos under the license stated, usually CC-by-SA-4. JMK (talk) 17:51, 1 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, now the categories are merged - there will appear much more images than in the former category plants of Pretoria (see subcategories, I sorted by plant order) --anro (talk) 12:58, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That is great work, thank you. If you want you can also attend to Jan Celliers Park and Eugene Marais Park, both in Pretoria. JMK (talk) 17:59, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Facebook files[edit]

Hi, Please do not upload fils from Facebook. Rather upload the original file, or send a permission via COM:OTRS, or the files might be deleted. Regards, Yann (talk) 22:35, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have permission for all files that I download from facebook, indeed many of them, and I am also allowed to take temporary copy right on the images, before I release them under CC-by-SA. If I did not state that I have copy right on the images, please point out to me. I can arrange permission via OTRS, but will it have to be done for each and every file? Or will one e-mail that covers all suffice? All such files are neatly placed in author categories. JMK (talk) 08:04, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Two of the affected photographers have agreed to send OTRS confirmation, and I am trying to contact a third. JMK (talk) 11:40, 19 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wil graag jou foto van die hartwaterbosluis by Steenbokpan, Limpopo, daarop hergebruik, nie veel groter as twee of drie posseëls nie.

Net "JMK, Wikipedia", of "Wikipedia", of "Wikipedia, Creative Commons" sal wat my betref voldoen. Erkenning van wikipedia is belangriker as persoonlike erkenning vir my fotografiese pogings. Al my creative commons fotos is in "Category:Photographs by User:JMK", as jy nog ander benodig wat van Suid-Afrikaanse oorsprong is. JMK (talk) 08:29, 3 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, we received an authorisation from Weto tours about the photos uploaded to Commons. Was you the user that asked for the permission initially? --Ruthven (msg) 12:44, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Correct, I asked and obtained permission from the author of those photos, and arranged that he sends OTRS confirmation. JMK (talk) 13:01, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you please tell me the nickname you used for that confirmation, so that I can double ckeck it? (you can write me by email, if you prefer) --Ruthven (msg) 13:03, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Where do I find your e-mail? JMK (talk) 13:25, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Battle of Elands River 4-16 August 1900.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

File:Wilaru and Yingabalanara.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Thanks for uploading File:Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) on the road (16509940256), crop.jpg.

If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

How could you considerate a water wall as a beehive ? Why do you add Category:Beehive huts in all dry stones huts. They are not all beehive. You may have some water well, sheepfold, hut, village, ect... Marianne Casamance (talk) 12:08, 10 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I personally believe that the term "beehive hut" has been hijacked in favour on one specific type. I, and others, have a broader view of it. The category was added only to huts which had the beehive shape. If you have a different view you are welcome to make the changes that are necessary. I'm sure it can be done in minutes, and I appreciate your input. JMK (talk) 12:14, 10 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The category "beehive hut" which I created must be seen in the broad sense, and is not intended to be equivalent to the wikipedia article "beehive hut", which I am well aware of. There are other "beehive huts", broadly speaking, which as yet have no wikipedia articles, or commons categories, or any photos yet, so the current "beehive hut" article may be disambiguated in future. So I intend to create a new subcategory, equivalent to the type of hut described as a "beehive hut" in wikipedia, and will link it with the wikipedia article to eliminate confusion. It may be useful to consider that although we have categorized these structures neatly, there are potentially other categories which may be added, which will only partially overlap with the current ones, as the characters embodied by the categories may not be mutually exclusive. Dear JMK, thanks for working on the colors of File:Delagoa bay.jpg. I have just overwritten this file with a higher-resolution version from the original source. Wiki Loves Africa 2020[edit]

Contribute to Wiki Loves Africa and to how the world sees Africa! Contribuez à Wiki Loves Africa et impactez la façon dont le monde voit l’Afrique!
Dear JMK

In the past, you contributed to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes.

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa.

When does it take place?

The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020.

What should we contribute?

Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. It encourages the submission of visual representations of movement or transportation, whether by path, road, sea air, by self-propelled, animal or mechanical means, or the historical or contemporary structures that have been created to facilitate movement or the transportation of people, goods, or animals.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to understanding and African visibility, there are several prizes on offer. The international prizes are:

  • 1st prize: US$1000
  • 2nd prize: US$800
  • 3rd prize: US$500

Additional categories are:

  • Culturally specific or traditional representations of transport or structures that facilitate transportation : US$500
  • Prize for best quality video: $500

Each winner will also receive a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers). Additional prizes will be available in some countries.

For rules and information about how to participate, or to join the contest, click on Contribute to the Wiki Loves Africa photo contest.

Warmest,

Anthere, for the Wiki Loves Africa Team

  • 1er prix: US$1000
  • 2ème prix: US$800
  • 3ème prix: US$500

Catégories additionnelles:

  • Transport ou structures de transport traditionnelles : US$500

Hello JMK, this is only the second time I see a cropped photo. Why and what are cropped photos used for ? Thanks in advance. Regards --Olga Ernst (talk) 14:56, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It may be more easily used in an article about the person. In this case I adjusted the midtones a bit so that the facial features are clearer, and if one uses that image on an article page, the distinctive features of the person may be seen more clearly. The artist by the way, used a lot of imagination when deciding on the face, or worked from a model. The person may be Zulu, but not Dingane. JMK (talk) 15:01, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for explaining JMK, in the meantime I saw your changes on page Dingane kaSenzangakhona ! It looks much better ! Regards --Olga Ernst (talk) 16:10, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi JMK, thanks for adding Golden hour in South Africa !! I took this picture after I visited my mom in Living Hope (Capri, Kommetjie) for the last time ... 2 hours later she died. A precious photo to me ! Regards --Olga Ernst (talk) 18:56, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

identity[edit]

Hi JMK - I saw you changed the subspecies in File:Melaniparus niger xanthostomus, Marakele NP, South Africa 1.jpg; if you're sure of that, I'll rename the file accordingly - MPF (talk) 14:34, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Based it on "Roberts geographic variation of southern African birds"[1] which recognizes three subspecies. But must admit that I don't know if Birds of the World[2] does the same or recognizes fewer. Clancey recognized many subspecies which the latter does not recognize. Will have to check, so perhaps better to leave the file name as it is. JMK (talk) 16:47, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The latter also appears to recognize three[1], but would like to see their names to see if they correlate with Roberts. JMK (talk) 16:52, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Avibase gives the same three names as Roberts, and based on the maps in Roberts, it is certainly ravidus. Have contact with the photographer and will ask his opinion. JMK (talk) 17:00, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The photographer is ok with renaming it. JMK (talk) 17:13, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  1. Chittenden, H. (2012) Roberts geographic variation of southern African birds, Cape Town: JVBBF, pp. 40–41 ISBN: 978-1-920602-00-0.
  2. del Hoyo, J. (2003) Handbook of the Birds of the World, vol. 8: Broadbills to Tapaculos, Barcelona: Lynx Edicions
Excellent, thanks! The 3 subspecies were recognised when I uploaded the photo in the first place, but their range descriptions in the IOC list are very brief (just 'n South Africa' for xanthostomus, and 'ne South Africa' for ravidus), so I must have misinterpreted them. I'll rename it and the others from the same set. - MPF (talk) 19:14, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Why not a Cycas revoluta?[edit]

Hello, I'm intrigued by this change you have made. As far as I know that's a Cycas revoluta, I believe there even is a card stating it, or used to exist. Why did you remove the category? It's probably an old exemplar from the 19th century, when that garden was planted, that's why it's so high. Darwin Ahoy! 15:48, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I thought the leaflets were too broad for Cycas, and perhaps not long enough. As I don't have an image of it up close, I accept your move back to Cycas revoluta. JMK 17:15, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello! I went there yesterday, and you were very much corrected in your assumption, indeed. One of the exemplars was identified as Category:Encephalartos transvenosus. I took some photos, which you can see here:Category:Cycadales in Madeira. They are not splendid, as it was already after sunset, but I'll get back there with better light. Thank you very much for noticing the different species. Darwin Ahoy! 21:24, 22 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is great to know! JMK ([[User talk:JMK#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 18:00, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
